SBAY Geek Ride Baypointe to Sunnyvale Baylands Park [back up to the SBAY Geek Ride] This page contains directions to sbay.org's Geek Ride when it is held at the Sunnyvale Baylands Park, starting from the Baypointe Light Rail Station in North San Jose and ending at the Borregas Light Rail Station in Sunnyvale. (This route can start from one of several stations. If you came here from the SBAY Geek Ride page then this is where it starts.) It goes through parts of North San Jose, onto part of the Bay Trail in Santa Clara and through the Sunnyvale Baylands Park. The route follows some busy city streets at the beginning and end (to reach light rail), turning to dirt and gravel trails around baylands park. Road bikes will have problems on the heavy gravel, but a second route through Baylands can be used instead. Rollerblades are NOT recommended. Variations on this route can run about 10-15 miles. GPS Coordinates:

If you have a GPS receiver, enter this as a waypoint in order to get a direction pointer and enroute distances.

• Latitude: 37 degrees 24.643 minutes North (37° 14' 38.6" N)
• Longitude: 121 degrees 56.523 minutes West (121° 52' 31.4" W)

These coordinates will put you on the Baypointe Light Rail Station's northern platform near the crosswalk across East Tasman Drive.

Via Public Transportation:

• VTA Light Rail: Unless you already have a pass (such as an Eco-Pass), purchase a ticket at the station before boarding the trolley. Bikes board at the center of each light rail car - the doors have bicycle symbols next to them. There are four bike racks per car and room for two more cyclists to hold their bikes. Stay in the center/turntable area of the car.
  • From anywhere on the Guadalupe Light Rail line (San Jose): Depending on the boarding point, allow 5-60 minutes for trolley travel each way. Take the Guadalupe Light Rail line, northbound to Baypointe at the end of the line in North San Jose.
  • From anywhere on the Tasman Light Rail line (Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara): Depending on the boarding point, allow 5-30 minutes for trolley travel each way. Take the Tasman Light Rail line eastbound to the Baypointe light rail station at the end of the line in North San Jose. (Note: in Spring 2001, Baypointe will no longer be the eastern end of the Tasman line when two more stations are completed at Cisco Way and I-880/Milpitas.)

  • VTA Bus: the following routes operate on Sunday afternoons.
    • VTA Bus Route 33: Baypointe LRT Station to Weller and Main (Milpitas)
    • VTA Bus Route 58: West Valley to Alviso
    • VTA Bus Route 74: Eastridge to Baypointe LRT Station (last return trip at 6:05PM)
    • Note: Route 140 (Sunnyvale to Fremont BART) and other commute shuttle routes do not run on weekends

From I-880:

• Exit in Milpitas at Tasman Drive westbound. (In the other direction the road is called Great Mall Parkway.)
• Follow the light rail tracks, which are under construction in the median of Tasman. Continue westbound past Zanker Rd.
• As you pass by it, note the location of the Baypointe light rail station (A-frame roof, three tracks, two platforms - you can't miss it) in the median of East Tasman Dr.
• Unless you have somewhere else to park, turn left at N First or at Rio Robles.
• Park in the Cisco parking lot between First and Rio Robles along Tasman. (This is only OK because it's a weekend.) Park away from popular parking spots at building entrances. If you see an RV covered with a tarp, use it as a landmark for a spot to park out of the way from the buildings.
• Get your bike out and ride it back to Baypointe.

From Hwy 237:

• Exit at N First Street southbound.
• Unless you have somewhere else to park, immediately past Tasman Drive turn right in the first driveway.
• Park in the Cisco parking lot between First and Rio Robles along Tasman. (This is only OK because it's a weekend.) Park away from popular parking spots at building entrances. If you see an RV covered with a tarp, use it as a landmark for a spot to park out of the way from the buildings.
• Get your bike out and ride it back to Baypointe, two blocks eastbound (across N First St) on Tasman Dr.

From US 101:

• Exit at Great America Parkway northbound. (In the other direction, the road is named Bowers Ave.)
• After passing the Great America amusement park, turn right on Tasman Drive.
• When you see Cisco building (on either side),] start watching for the traffic signal at Rio Robles.
• Immediately after Rio Robles, turn right in the first driveway, which is a Cisco parking lot.
• Park in the Cisco parking lot between First and Rio Robles along Tasman. (This is only OK because it's a weekend.) Park away from popular parking spots at building entrances. If you see an RV covered with a tarp, use it as a landmark for a spot to park out of the way from the buildings.
• Get your bike out and ride it back to Baypointe, two blocks eastbound (across N First St) on Tasman Dr.

Alternate from US 101:

• Exit at Montague Expressway eastbound. (In the other direction, the road is named San Tomas Expwy.)
• Turn left at N First Street.
• Turn left at Rio Robles.
• Turn Right at Tasman.
• Turn immediately right again in the first driveway, which is a Cisco parking lot.
• Park in the Cisco parking lot between First and Rio Robles along Tasman. (This is only OK because it's a weekend.) Park away from popular parking spots at building entrances. If you see an RV covered with a tarp, use it as a landmark for a spot to park out of the way from the buildings.
• Get your bike out and ride it back to Baypointe, two blocks eastbound (across N First St) on Tasman Dr.

From downtown and South San Jose:

• Take Hwy 87 northbound until it ends at US 101.
• Continue with the directions from US 101 above.

From Santa Cruz, Los Gatos, Campbell and Saratoga:

• Take Hwy 17 northbound until it becomes I-880.
• Continue with the directions from I-880 above.
• Use caution near the 101 interchange as the road narrows from three to two lanes. Traffic tie-ups are likely even on weekends.

From Cupertino and Los Altos:

• Take Hwy 85 northbound.
• Exit in Mtn View at Hwy 237 eastbound.
• Continue with the directions from Hwy 237 above.
