The SBAY Wireless Network
Technical Info: IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ethernet

Next[Next]
  • Spectrum: 2.4 GHz and Infra-Red; 5.8 GHz in the future (ISM bands)
  • Spread spectrum techinques:
    • FHSS - Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum
    • DSSS - Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum
  • Modulations: FHSS uses multilevel GPSK; DSSS uses BPSK and QPSK
  • Channels: FHSS uses 75 non-overlapping 1 MHz channels, DSSS uses 14 overlapping 22 MHz channels
  • Speed:
    • 802.11 FHSS supports 2 mbps (3 mbps on non-standard) at 2.4 GHz
    • 802.11b DSSS supports up to 11 mbps at 2.4 GHz
    • 802.11a DSSS is estimated to support 40 mbps at 5.8 GHz
  • Operational modes: Infrastructure and Ad-Hoc
  • ISM band power rules: up to 1 watt in a 6dBi antenna; for every dB of additional gain in the antenna, decrease your power input by the same amount (in other words, up to 4 watts EIRP)
  • Security: "WEP" provides "Wired Equivelent Privacy" via encryption
